Knowing the best time to visit Volcanoes National Park helps you plan the ideal gorilla trekking trip. Thanks to Rwanda’s high altitude, the park has a cool climate year-round, and gorilla trekking runs every day of the year – but the seasons affect trail conditions and comfort.
Dry seasons (June–September, December–February)
The long dry season from June to September, and the shorter dry spell from December to February, are the most popular times to trek. Firmer trails make the hike easier and the forest less slippery, with daytime temperatures around 25–27°C and cool nights. These months book up well in advance.
Green seasons (March–May, October–November)
The wetter months bring lush scenery, fewer visitors and often easier gorilla-permit availability. Trails are muddier and rain is likely, so good waterproof gear is essential – but the rewards are dramatic misty landscapes and a quieter park.
What to pack
Whatever the season, bring warm layers, waterproofs, sturdy hiking boots and gardening-style gloves for gripping vegetation, as mornings on the Virungas are cool and the forest damp.
