Bwindi Gorilla Tours
Bwindi gorilla tours take you into the misty depths of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that shelters almost half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Trekking here to spend a magical hour with a habituated gorilla family is the single most sought-after wildlife experience in Africa – and Bwindi offers the widest choice of gorilla families across its four trekking sectors of Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo.
Why Choose a Bwindi Gorilla Tour
Bwindi is the beating heart of Uganda’s gorilla tourism. With more habituated families than anywhere else on earth, it offers superb availability, a range of trek difficulties to suit every fitness level, and the chance to combine gorillas with the gorilla habituation experience, birding and community visits. Our Bwindi gorilla tours are private and tailor-made, with permits secured on your behalf and expert local guides throughout.
- Four trekking sectors – the widest choice of gorilla families in Africa.
- Affordable permits compared with Rwanda.
- Combines easily with chimpanzee trekking, wildlife safaris and birding.
What to Expect on Your Bwindi Gorilla Trek
Your day begins with an early briefing at the sector headquarters, where you are assigned a habituated gorilla family. Accompanied by armed rangers and trackers, you hike into the dense forest – anywhere from one to six hours across steep, often muddy terrain (the “impenetrable” is well earned). Once you reach the family, you enjoy one unforgettable hour watching silverbacks, mothers and playful youngsters at close quarters. Porters are available to carry bags and lend a hand, and the minimum age for trekking is 15.
Best Time for Bwindi Gorilla Tours
Bwindi gorilla tours run year-round, and gorillas are present every day. The dry seasons – June to September and December to February – offer firmer trails and easier trekking, while the wetter months bring lush scenery, fewer crowds and lower lodge rates. Because permits are limited to eight visitors per family per day, early booking is essential, especially for peak dates.
