Lake Kivu

Lake Kivu – Rwanda's beautiful Rift Valley lake, offering beaches, boat trips and relaxation after gorilla trekking.

Lake Kivu is one of Africa’s Great Lakes, lying along Rwanda’s western border amid scenic hills. After the exertions of gorilla and chimpanzee trekking, it provides the ideal place to rest and recuperate, with beaches, water sports and tranquil lakeside towns.

Lakeside towns

The resort towns of Gisenyi (Rubavu), Kibuye (Karongi) and Cyangugu (Rusizi) offer beaches, boat trips, island visits and lovely lakeside accommodation, from guesthouses to comfortable hotels.

Activities

Lake Kivu is perfect for swimming, kayaking, boat cruises, mountain walks and picnics. The Congo-Nile Trail runs along its shore, offering superb hiking and cycling with panoramic views.

Best time to visit

The drier months are ideal, and Lake Kivu combines beautifully with gorilla trekking in nearby Volcanoes National Park and forest walks in Nyungwe.
