Day-by-Day Itinerary
Arrival in Kigali
Arrive at Kigali International Airport where your safari driver-guide meets and transfers you to your hotel. If time allows, visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial to learn about Rwanda's history and its remarkable story of recovery. Overnight in Kigali.
Transfer to Akagera National Park
Drive east to Akagera National Park, a dramatic landscape of rolling hills, savannah and woodland dotted with lakes. Look out for giraffes, hippos, buffaloes, zebra and crocodile. Dinner and overnight.
Game Drives & Boat Cruise on Lake Ihema
An early morning game drive begins with a spectacular sunrise across the northern plains where wildlife concentrates. Enjoy a relaxing boat cruise on Lake Ihema. Dinner and overnight.
Akagera to Nyungwe Forest
Drive to southern Rwanda through terraced hillsides, stopping at the Nyanza King's Palace and the National Museum in Butare, with lunch en route. Continue through the dramatic Nyungwe landscape to your lodge. Dinner and overnight.
Chimpanzee Tracking in Nyungwe
An early start for chimpanzee tracking through Nyungwe, home to 13 primate species and over 300 bird species. Carry a picnic lunch as tracking can be strenuous and take much of the day. Dinner and overnight.
Colobus Tracking, Waterfall Trail or Canopy Walk
Choose from a range of hikes - an escorted walk in search of large groups of colobus monkeys and birds, a guided walk to the waterfall, or the famous canopy walk. Dinner and overnight.
Nyungwe to Volcanoes National Park
After early breakfast, journey north to the Virunga Volcanoes and Volcanoes National Park, home to the endangered mountain gorillas (about 6 hours). Dinner and overnight.
Gorilla Trekking & Dian Fossey Option
Rise early and drive to the park headquarters to meet your trackers before heading up the slopes of the Virungas to visit a habituated gorilla family. Optionally, hike to Dian Fossey's grave or enjoy a forest walk. Dinner and overnight.
Departure
After breakfast, transfer to Kigali for your flight home, with a chance to visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial if not seen on arrival.
