Knowing the best time to track Nyungwe chimpanzees helps you plan a rewarding trek in one of Africa’s great rainforests. Chimpanzee tracking is among the most popular activities in Nyungwe Forest National Park, and while it runs year-round, conditions vary with the seasons.

Dry seasons (June–September, December–February)

The dry months are generally the most comfortable for chimpanzee tracking, with firmer forest trails and easier walking. These are the most popular periods to visit and combine well with gorilla trekking in Volcanoes.

Wet seasons

During the rains the forest is lush and, interestingly, chimpanzees often move to lower altitudes in search of fruit, which can sometimes make them easier to locate – though trails become muddier and more challenging. Good waterproof gear is essential.

Tips for tracking

Treks start early in the morning when chimps are most active, and can be strenuous, so a reasonable level of fitness helps. Sightings are never guaranteed with wild primates, but the experience of the forest is rewarding whatever the season.
