Looking for something special in just one week? Track chimpanzees and up to twelve other primate species in Kibale Forest, glimpse the mysterious papyrus gonolek in Bigodi Swamp, visit the mating grounds of the Uganda kob in Queen Elizabeth National Park, and drift past hippos on a Kazinga Channel boat cruise. The unquestioned highlight: a full-grown silverback and his family, met face to face during gorilla trekking in the afromontane forest of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. A late-afternoon and early-morning game drive in Lake Mburo National Park – the only western park with impala and zebra – completes one truly amazing African week.
Choose the budget version with “lazy camping” (a fully equipped safari tent, ready on arrival, with shared facilities) or the comfortable version in lodge rooms throughout. All transport is in 4WD Land Cruisers with pop-up roofs and a window seat for everyone.

An early departure west brings you to Kibale Forest Camp by the afternoon (±6.5 hours), where you fall asleep to the sounds of the tropical rainforest.
At 8:00 am begin the four-hour chimpanzee walk – with a good chance of ten other primate species, plus Kibale's famous butterflies and birds. The afternoon is spent walking the community-run Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, home of the papyrus gonolek.
Via Fort Portal (±5.5 hours) reach The Bush Lodge with its beautiful view over the Kazinga Channel. In the afternoon, a two-hour launch cruise brings hippos, buffaloes, elephants, and waterbirds within easy camera range.
Travel south (±8 hours) through the terraced hills, lakes, and bamboo forests of Kigezi – a landscape so lovely it's called the “Switzerland of Africa” – to your lodge on the edge of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
The day you've been waiting for. After the 7:45 am briefing at park headquarters, trek into the forest with ranger guides to your assigned gorilla family in southern Bwindi (Nkuringo, Nshongi, Mishaya, or Kahungye) and spend a magical hour in their company. Treks can take 3–9 hours – reasonable fitness is recommended.
Drive to Lake Mburo (±5.5 hours) with lunch in Mbarara. This compact gem is the only park in western Uganda with impala and plains zebra; enjoy a late-afternoon game drive or a village cultural walk.
An early game drive or guided walk, late breakfast, then the return journey with a stop at the Equator for photos, souvenirs, and coffee (±5 hours). Drop-off at your Kampala or Entebbe hotel – or directly at the airport for your onward flight.
