Volcanoes National Park is Rwanda’s crown jewel and the only place in the country to trek endangered mountain gorillas. Set among the misty peaks of the Virunga Massif, the park offers far more than gorillas, with a range of unforgettable activities.

Mountain gorilla trekking

The park’s signature experience is mountain gorilla trekking, a magical hour spent with a habituated gorilla family among the bamboo and forest of the Virungas – one of the world’s greatest wildlife encounters.

Golden monkey tracking

The park is also home to troops of playful, endangered golden monkeys, and tracking them through the bamboo is a delightful, more relaxed alternative or complement to gorilla trekking.

The Dian Fossey hike

A moving hike leads to the tomb of the famous primatologist Dian Fossey and the site of her Karisoke Research Center, offering insight into the story of gorilla conservation.

Volcano climbs

Adventurous visitors can climb the park’s volcanoes, including Mount Bisoke with its stunning crater lake and the more demanding Mount Karisimbi, the highest peak in the Virungas.
