Just a short drive from Arusha town, Arusha National Park is the most accessible park in northern Tanzania and perfect for a day trip. Though compact, it packs in three distinct areas – Momella Lakes, Mount Meru and Ngurdoto Crater – with landscapes ranging from savanna and acacia scrub to rainforest and alpine peaks.
Dry season (June to October)
The dry season is the best overall time to visit. Wildlife concentrates around water sources, vegetation is thinner, and there are fewer mosquitoes, making game viewing on foot and by canoe easier. August is the driest month. These months also deliver the clearest views of Mount Meru and, on a good day, Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.
Green season (November to May)
Short rains fall in November and December, with longer rains from March to May. The park turns beautifully green and welcomes migratory birds, while flamingos gather in numbers at the Momella Lakes. Crowds are minimal – Arusha is one of Tanzania’s best-kept secrets – and December to February often brings bright skies between showers.
Wildlife and activities
Arusha is home to elephant, buffalo, zebra, giraffe and hippo, and is a rare northern park where walking and canoe safaris are permitted. It also boasts one of the world’s densest giraffe populations.
