The Wildebeest Migration in Tanzania is not a single annual event but a continuous, year-round journey of more than 1.5 million wildebeest, zebra, eland and gazelle across the vast landscapes of the Serengeti and Masai Mara, always following the rains and fresh grazing.

A year-round cycle

In January and February, huge numbers of calves are born on the fertile short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti. As the plains dry out, the herds move north, splitting and spreading as they chase new pasture – some heading through the Western Corridor towards the Grumeti River, others through Loliondo and the central Seronera Valley.

The river crossings

Between July and September, the herds reach the Mara River as they push towards Kenya’s Masai Mara. Watching thousands of wildebeest brave the crocodile-filled waters is one of nature’s most dramatic spectacles – though be prepared to share the best crossing points with many other safari vehicles. In October and November, the herds turn south again to begin the cycle anew.

Patience and flexibility

The migration follows no fixed timetable; the animals move on instinct and rainfall. The best way to follow them is overland, with an experienced guide tracking the herds. If you prefer a quieter experience, you can catch the migration in different parts of the Serengeti at various times of year.
