Tsavo National Park is Kenya’s largest protected area and one of the oldest and biggest wildlife parks in the world. Split into Tsavo East and Tsavo West, it covers a vast, rugged wilderness famous for its red-dust elephants, dramatic volcanic scenery and rich big-game populations.
Tsavo East
Tsavo East is known for its open plains and the Galana River, where large herds of elephants coat themselves in the park’s distinctive red soil. Lion, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and the rare hirola antelope roam the endless savanna.
Tsavo West
More scenic and varied, Tsavo West features volcanic hills, the crystal-clear Mzima Springs with its hippos and crocodiles, and Shetani lava flows. It offers superb birding and beautiful landscapes.
History of the man-eaters
Tsavo is famous for the man-eating lions that terrorised railway workers in 1898 – a dramatic chapter of history that still fascinates visitors today.
