Samburu National Reserve, Kenya

Samburu National Reserve lies in Kenya’s arid north, a rugged land of red earth, doum palms and the life-giving Ewaso Nyiro River. Wilder and less crowded than the Masai Mara, Samburu offers a distinctive safari experience and a chance to see species found nowhere in southern Kenya.

The Special Five

Samburu is famous for the “Special Five” – the Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Somali ostrich and beisa oryx – all adapted to this semi-desert environment. Elephants, lions, leopards and crocodiles are also frequently seen along the river.

Samburu culture

The reserve is home to the Samburu people, close relatives of the Maasai, whose colourful dress and traditions add a rich cultural dimension to any visit.

Best time to visit

The dry seasons of June to October and December to March concentrate wildlife along the river, offering excellent game viewing.
