Amboseli National Park is one of Kenya’s most iconic safari destinations, world-famous for its large herds of free-ranging elephants set against the snow-capped backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro. Located in southern Kenya on the border with Tanzania, Amboseli offers some of the most photogenic game viewing in all of Africa.
Elephants and wildlife
Amboseli is best known for its elephants, including some of the largest tuskers left in Africa, studied here for decades in one of the world’s longest-running elephant research projects. Alongside them you will find lion, cheetah, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and hundreds of bird species drawn to the park’s swamps and marshes.
Views of Kilimanjaro
On a clear morning or late afternoon, Africa’s highest mountain towers over the plains, creating the classic Amboseli photograph of elephants crossing in front of Kilimanjaro. The best light is usually at dawn before cloud builds around the summit.
Best time to visit
The dry seasons – June to October and January to February – offer the best game viewing and the clearest mountain views. Wildlife concentrates around the permanent swamps, making sightings reliable.
