Tarangire National Park lies about 140 kilometres from Arusha and is a key stop on Tanzania’s famous northern safari circuit, usually combined with the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. Getting there is straightforward, and most visitors reach it by road from Arusha.
Flying in
Most international travellers fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), served by carriers such as KLM, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, Qatar Airways, RwandAir, Turkish Airlines and Air Tanzania. It is also possible to fly into Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam and connect to Arusha, or to fly into Nairobi and continue overland.
The drive from Arusha
The best way to reach Tarangire is by vehicle. From Arusha it is a pleasant two-hour drive to the entrance gate, with only the final 7 kilometres unpaved. From Tarangire you can continue easily to Lake Manyara (about two hours) or the Ngorongoro Crater (about four hours), which is why the park fits so neatly into a northern-circuit itinerary.
Travel requirements
A passport valid for at least six months with a blank page is required, along with a tourist visa (available on arrival) and, in most cases, proof of yellow-fever vaccination. Requirements change, so always confirm with your nearest Tanzanian embassy – and when you book with us, we handle the details for you.
