Packing for a Masai Mara safari is all about travelling light and dressing in layers. Most domestic Kenyan flights limit luggage to around 15 kg including hand luggage, so a soft duffel bag and a well-chosen kit go a long way.
Clothing and colours
Pack casual, lightweight, breathable clothing in neutral tones – khaki, olive and beige blend into the bush and hide dust. Avoid bright colours and dark blue or black, and note that camouflage patterns are best avoided in Kenya as they are associated with the military. Bring a warm fleece or jacket for chilly early-morning game drives, plus a hat, sunglasses and a light rain layer.
Essential gear
Include high-factor sunscreen, insect repellent, any personal medication, a good camera with spare batteries, binoculars and a power bank. Comfortable closed shoes are ideal for walks and drives.
Documents
Carry your passport (valid six months, with blank pages), Kenya eVisa, travel insurance details, flight tickets and a card for payments. Keep digital copies as backup.
Good to know
Plastic bags are banned in Kenya, so avoid packing them. Most lodges and camps offer laundry, so you can pack fewer clothes than you think.
