A nature walk safari in the Masai Mara offers an intimate, ground-level way to experience the wilderness. Guided on foot by a Maasai guide or armed ranger, walking safaris let you appreciate the details a vehicle passes by – tracks, plants, insects, birds and the sheer scale of the savanna.
Where nature walks happen
Because walking is restricted in the main reserve, guided nature walks take place in the private conservancies surrounding the Mara, where they are carefully planned and monitored. Many camps and lodges also offer shorter walks of around an hour close to their grounds.
What to expect
Walks are best in the cooler early morning or late afternoon. Shorter in-camp walks last around an hour, while longer guided treks of up to three hours cover several kilometres, often with a packed breakfast. Your guide teaches you to read the bush and stay safe around wildlife – a genuinely different perspective from a game drive.
Plan your walking safari
Combine walking safaris with classic game drives in the Masai Mara. Start planning your Kenya safari.
