A little preparation goes a long way on safari. These important Kenya safari tips cover the practical essentials so you can focus on the wildlife and scenery.
When to go
Kenya is a year-round destination. The dry seasons (June–October and January–February) offer the best game viewing, with the Great Migration in the Masai Mara from July to October. The green seasons bring lush scenery, superb birding and lower prices.
Health and documents
Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months with blank pages, arrange your Kenya eVisa in advance, and carry travel insurance. Consult your doctor about anti-malarial medication and recommended vaccinations, and a yellow-fever certificate may be required.
What to pack
Pack light in neutral colours, with layers for cool mornings, sun protection, insect repellent, binoculars and a good camera. Remember that plastic bags are banned in Kenya.
Money, tipping and connectivity
Carry some US dollars and Kenyan shillings; cards are widely accepted in towns and lodges. Tipping guides and camp staff is customary and appreciated. Mobile coverage is good in most areas, and many lodges offer Wi-Fi.
Safety and responsible travel
Travel with a reputable operator, follow your guide’s instructions around wildlife, and support community and conservation-focused lodges where you can. Respect local customs and always ask before photographing people.
