Getting to Meru National Park is straightforward by both road and air. Located roughly 350 kilometres northeast of Nairobi and about 60 kilometres east of Meru town, this wild and beautiful park sits just below the equator, watered by more than a dozen rivers and streams flowing down from the highlands. It has two main gates – Murera and Mulika – and can be reached by private safari vehicle, public transport or light aircraft.
By road
Most visitors reach Meru by road, a scenic drive of around five to six hours from Nairobi. The two main routes run via Nyeri and Nanyuki, skirting the slopes of Mount Kenya, or via Embu on the eastern side of the mountain. A 4×4 vehicle is strongly recommended, particularly in the wet season, and travelling with an experienced driver-guide makes the journey far easier and more rewarding.
By air
For those who prefer to save time, scheduled and charter flights operate daily from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to the park’s airstrips at Mulika and Kinna. The flight takes under two hours and can be combined with connections from other safari parks, making it easy to include Meru as part of a wider Kenya itinerary.
