Lake Manyara National Park in Tanzania protects a rich mix of habitats – groundwater forest, open plains, the Rift Valley escarpment and the alkaline lake itself – and this diversity supports an equally varied cast of wildlife in a surprisingly small area.
Tree-climbing lions
Manyara is famous for its tree-climbing lions, often seen draped over the branches of acacia trees – an unusual behaviour that makes the park a special stop on the northern circuit.
Elephants and large mammals
The park was originally established to protect its elephants, which are notably relaxed around vehicles. Alongside them you will find buffalo, giraffe, hippo, zebra, impala and several other antelope species.
Primates
The groundwater forest is alive with large troops of baboons and blue monkeys, making Manyara one of the best places in Tanzania to observe primates at close range.
Birdlife
With more than 400 species, the park is a birder’s delight. The soda lake attracts flamingos, pelicans, storks and countless waterbirds, while the forest holds hornbills, turacos and birds of prey.
