After fifteen years of guiding travellers into the misty forests of East Africa, the question I am asked more than any other is simple: should I trek gorillas in Uganda or in Rwanda? It is the right question to ask, because while both countries offer a life-changing encounter with wild mountain gorillas, the experience, the cost and the journey to reach them differ in ways that genuinely matter. This honest comparison draws on what I have seen on the ground, so you can choose the country that fits your budget, fitness and travel style.

The short answer

If your priority is value, longer time in the wild and combining gorillas with a broader safari, Uganda is usually the better choice. If your priority is a shorter, more comfortable trip with quicker access to the trailhead, Rwanda often wins. Neither is “better” in absolute terms, they simply suit different travellers. Cost: where your money goes

The single biggest difference is the permit. A Uganda gorilla permit costs USD 800 for foreign non-residents, while a Rwanda permit is USD 1,500. That USD 700 gap per person is significant, especially for couples and families. For travellers focused on value, this is often the deciding factor, and it is the main reason many visitors now choose Uganda for their Uganda safari adventures.

Getting there and trek difficulty

Rwanda has a clear logistical advantage. The gorilla families live in Volcanoes National Park, only about a two to three hour drive from Kigali International Airport. You can land, sleep one night, trek the next morning and be home within a few days.

Uganda requires more commitment. The gorillas live in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in the far south-west, an eight to nine hour drive from Entebbe, or a short charter flight. The forest itself is also more demanding underfoot, dense, steep and aptly named “impenetrable”. In exchange, you get a wilder, more immersive trek and the option to weave in other parks along the way.

Scenery and the wider trip

Rwanda rewards you with the dramatic, cone-shaped Virunga volcanoes rising above tidy terraced hills. It is compact and photogenic. Uganda offers greater variety, you can pair gorillas with tree-climbing lions, chimpanzees and classic savannah game drives, making it ideal for a longer, more rounded East African itinerary.

So which should you choose?

Choose Rwanda if you have limited time, want the easiest logistics and do not mind the premium permit. Choose Uganda if you want better value, a more adventurous trek and the chance to build a full safari around your gorilla encounter.
