Serengeti National Park is Tanzania’s most famous safari destination and one of the greatest wildlife arenas on Earth. Its name, from the Maasai word Siringet meaning “endless plains,” perfectly captures the vast golden grasslands that stretch to the horizon. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Serengeti is the setting for the legendary Great Migration and offers world-class game viewing year-round.
The Great Migration
The Serengeti hosts the annual Great Wildebeest Migration, when over 1.5 million wildebeest, together with hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle, move across the plains in a never-ending cycle of grazing, calving and dramatic river crossings.
Wildlife
Beyond the migration, the Serengeti supports the Big Five and one of the highest concentrations of predators in Africa, including lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena, alongside elephant, giraffe, hippo and over 500 bird species.
Regions of the Serengeti
From the central Seronera Valley’s resident game to the northern Mara River crossings and the southern calving grounds, each region of the park offers a different experience through the year.
Best time to visit
The Serengeti rewards visitors year-round; the best time depends on where the migration is and what you want to see. The dry season (June to October) offers superb general game viewing and the northern river crossings.
