Arusha National Park is one of Tanzania’s most scenic and accessible parks, lying just a short drive from the safari hub of Arusha city. Though compact, it packs remarkable variety into a small area – from the peaks of Mount Meru to the flamingo-fringed Momella Lakes and lush montane forest – making it perfect for a day trip or the start of a northern-circuit safari.
Mount Meru
The park is dominated by Mount Meru, Africa’s fifth-highest mountain at 4,566 metres. Climbing Meru is a rewarding multi-day trek in its own right and an excellent acclimatisation climb for those heading on to Kilimanjaro.
The Momella Lakes
A series of shallow alkaline lakes attracts flocks of flamingos and abundant waterbirds, and can be explored on a canoe safari – a rare activity in Tanzania’s parks.
Wildlife
Arusha is home to giraffe, buffalo, zebra, warthog and the black-and-white colobus monkey, along with over 400 bird species. Guided walking safaris are permitted, offering a more intimate experience.
Best time to visit
The park is rewarding year-round, with the dry season (June to October) best for climbing Meru and general game viewing.
