Game Viewing Safaris
Game Viewing Safaris in East Africa
Classic game drives across the great savannas of Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda – in search of the Big Five, the Great Migration and Africa’s most iconic wildlife.
A game viewing safari – the classic African game drive – is at the heart of any East African adventure. Exploring the plains in an open 4×4 with an expert guide, you search for lions, elephants, leopards, buffalo, rhinos, giraffes, zebras and countless other species across some of the richest wildlife habitats on Earth. From the endless Serengeti and the Masai Mara to Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls, game viewing brings you face to face with the wild heart of Africa.
Best places for game viewing
Each East African country offers superb game viewing. In Kenya, the Masai Mara, Amboseli and Tsavo deliver classic big-game drives and the Great Migration. Tanzania‘s Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater rank among the finest wildlife destinations on the planet. Uganda‘s Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls combine game drives with boat safaris, while Rwanda‘s Akagera offers Big Five game viewing in a beautiful savanna setting.
Types of game viewing
Morning and afternoon game drives are the core of every safari, timed for when wildlife is most active. Night game drives, available in many private conservancies, reveal nocturnal species and predators on the hunt. Boat safaris on the Kazinga Channel, the Nile and the Rufiji offer game viewing from the water, while walking safaris bring you closer to the smaller details of the bush on foot.
Best time for game viewing
The dry seasons – roughly June to October and December to February – are generally best for game viewing, as thinning vegetation and shrinking water sources concentrate wildlife and make animals easier to spot. That said, East Africa rewards visitors year-round, and the green season brings lush scenery, newborn animals and excellent birding.
