Mahale Mountains National Park is one of Africa’s most beautiful and remote wilderness areas, rising steeply from the crystal-clear shores of Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania. Famous for offering some of the finest chimpanzee tracking on the planet, Mahale combines rainforest, mountains and beach in a truly extraordinary setting.

Chimpanzee tracking

Mahale is home to one of the largest known populations of wild chimpanzees, including well-studied habituated groups. Tracking them through the forested mountain slopes is a magical, physically rewarding experience among our closest relatives.

A stunning setting

The park has no roads – access is by boat along Lake Tanganyika – which adds to its sense of untouched wilderness. After trekking, the lake’s clear waters are perfect for swimming, snorkelling and kayaking.

Other wildlife

Alongside chimpanzees, Mahale supports red colobus, red-tailed and blue monkeys, forest birds and, in the more remote reaches, elusive larger mammals.
