Overview

Early morning, the sun just rising, monkeys calling from the bush – then the unforgettable moment your family tracks down its first elephant or lion. This 13-day Kenya & Tanzania family safari (recommended for children aged 8 and up) begins gently in Nairobi at the giraffe breeding centre and the famous elephant orphanage, then heads for the “salty dust” of Amboseli in the shadow of Kilimanjaro, where wildebeest, buffaloes, impalas, and flamingos strut across the soda flats with lions and hyenas never far behind.

You'll sleep in a traditional Maasai village, explore the volcanic Chyulu Hills on foot with a Maasai guide, dive into the market bustle of Loitokitok on the Tanzanian border, and meet the rest of the Big Five in the huge hilly savannah of Tsavo West. The grand finale: a flight to the spice island of Zanzibar for swimming, snorkelling, and spice tours on kilometre-long white sand. Group size 4–12; hikes are easy (2–4 hours) and adaptable to the children's wanderlust.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

1

Nairobi – Giraffe Centre

Karibu Kenya! Your English-speaking driver/guide meets you at the airport and brings you to a cosy garden hotel with a pool. In the afternoon, visit the Giraffe Centre, the breeding station for endangered Rothschild's giraffes, with feeding from the raised platform an instant family favourite.

2

Muteleu Maasai Traditional Village

Leave Nairobi for the Maasai village of Muteleu (±3 hours), a sustainable-tourism project of ten manyattas built from natural materials with proper beds, showers, and solar power. Learn about the daily life of East Africa's most famous people and take a short sunset hike – a special experience for every generation.

3

Chyulu Hills National Park

After breakfast with the Maasai, continue via Kimana to a tented camp at the foot of the Chyulu Hills, the volcanic range between Akamba and Maasai lands, and head out on a first afternoon exploration. Two nights of authentic igloo-tent camping with safari showers under the trees.

4

Hike in the Chyulu Hills

A bush breakfast, then an easy hike (3–5 hours, adaptable for kids) to the crest of what is sometimes called the youngest mountain range on earth – views to the Yatta Plateau, one of the longest lava flows in the world, and the massive Kilimanjaro to the southwest.

5

Riverbed hike and Loitokitok

Hike the Nalemoru riverbed to a small waterfall for a picnic, then plunge into the multicultural market town of Loitokitok on the Tanzanian border and visit the Teule children's home to see community support in action. Overnight in cottages at 1,750 m on Kilimanjaro's foothills.

6

Amboseli National Park

Game-drive day in Kenya's most iconic park: elephants against the snow-capped backdrop of Kilimanjaro, wetlands fed by the mountain's springs, over 400 bird species, plus wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, gerenuks – and the lions, jackals, and hyenas that follow them. Pool stop and lunch at a safari camp by the park gate.

7

Tsavo West – lava flows and Mzima Springs

Enter Tsavo West past the black Shetani lava flows and check into a wildly romantic safari camp. At Mzima Springs – the source of Mombasa's drinking water – watch hippos and crocodiles from the underwater observation chamber.

8

Full day in Tsavo West

Dawn game drive before breakfast, then stalking routes through Kenya's most varied park with a stop at Poacher's Lookout for sweeping views. Buffaloes, giraffes, lions, leopards, antelopes – eyes open! Late-afternoon game drive and camp relaxation.

9

Tsavo West to Nairobi

One last early-morning game drive, lunch stop at Hunters Lodge, and the drive back to Nairobi (±4.5 hours).

10

Elephant orphanage – fly to Zanzibar

Visit the Sheldrick elephant orphanage, where rescued baby elephants are raised for return to the wild, browse African crafts over lunch, then fly to Zanzibar and transfer to your beach resort on Uroa Bay.

11

12: Zanzibar beach days

Two full days on the snow-white sand: swimming, snorkelling, tennis, diving – or an optional Stone Town excursion and a spice tour among the cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon that named the island.

13

Journey home

A free morning before the group transfer to Zanzibar airport for your homeward flight.
