The 10 Days Best of Kenya Cultural Safari Tour is the finest Kenya itinerary for exploring the cultures and traditions of the people who call this country home. The best way to understand a people is through their traditions — and Kenya’s communities carry a wonderfully rich heritage.
This journey winds from the flamingos of Lake Nakuru through the emerald tea estates of Kericho into the Luo heartland around Lake Victoria — Kisumu, Kendu Bay, Homa Bay, Ruma National Park, and Rusinga Island — connecting you with fishermen, potters, storytellers, and local families in their own homeland.
Leave Nairobi early after breakfast, driving through the Great Rift Valley with a stop at the viewpoint over the breathtaking escarpment. Continue to Lake Nakuru for a game drive among flamingos, pelicans, and white rhinos. After an early lunch at Lake Nakuru Lodge, proceed to the evergreen town of Kericho for spectacular views of the tea plantations and time with the tea pickers. Dinner and overnight at a Kericho hotel.
After breakfast, depart for the Kano Plains to visit the grave of Lwanda Magere, the legendary Luo hero said to have turned to stone when struck by a Kalenjin spear. Continue past the rice plantations to arrive in Kisumu City by late evening, with a picnic lunch en route. Dinner and overnight at a hotel.
Spend the day in Kisumu: visit Dunga Beach, famous across Nyanza for its fish trade, and meet the local fishermen; explore the museum’s artefacts of Western Kenya’s tribes; and after lunch visit Kit Mikayi, the striking rock formation of “the first wife” in Luo tradition. Time allowing, hike Riat Hills for views over greater Kisumu. Optional evening out to experience Kisumu by night.
Drive to Kendu Bay along classic African rural roads, visiting Simbi Nyaima crater lake and its legends, then the Orian’g Women Group’s remarkable pottery market. After an early lunch, continue to the Kanjira and Kanam hot springs — hot enough to boil an egg in five minutes — and meet the workers who transport soda ash by donkey. Dinner and overnight in Homa Bay.
After breakfast, drive through the Lambwe Valley to Ruma National Park, host to Africa’s largest population of roan antelope, for a game drive and picnic lunch. Transfer to Mbita Point for dinner and overnight.
Visit Ligongo Hills on Rusinga Island, where Dr. Mary Leakey discovered the skull of Proconsul africanus, and take in panoramic views of the lake. Pay respects at the Tom Mboya Mausoleum, built in memory of the celebrated politician at his ancestral home in Kamasengere Village, and hear the mythology of the Nyama gi Ware stones. Ride around the island back to Mbita by evening.
After an early church visit, dedicate the day to community projects: women’s groups, orphan support initiatives, the Tom Mboya Memorial Hospital, and development projects financed by volunteers. Visit local homes to understand rural family life, then join fishermen pulling in their catch at dusk — fish being the lifeblood of the lakeside Luo.
Visit a local primary school and spend time with the pupils, then after lunch enjoy a traditional boat rally competition. Optional afternoon walk to the bird-rich, tranquil Gembe Hills, or relax at the hotel.
Cross by ferry from Mbita to Luanda for the drive to Kisumu and an early lunch, then continue to Nairobi, arriving late evening with a transfer to your hotel or the airport.
After breakfast, transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your homeward flight, marking the end of the 10 Days Kenya Cultural Safari.
