Getting to Akagera National Park is refreshingly easy. Covering around 1,120 square kilometres along Rwanda’s eastern border with Tanzania, Akagera is one of Africa’s oldest parks and lies close enough to the capital to visit even on a long day trip – though an overnight stay is far more rewarding.
From Kigali by road
Most visitors reach Akagera by road from Kigali, roughly 110 kilometres away. The drive takes around two to three hours on good tarmac before reaching the park, making it one of the most accessible major safari parks in East Africa. The main entrance is the southern Kiyonza Gate, near the park headquarters and lodges.
Arriving in Rwanda
International visitors arrive at Kigali International Airport, Rwanda’s main gateway, where our team meets you and handles transfers to the park. A 4×4 vehicle with an experienced driver-guide is the ideal way to explore.
