Nyungwe Forest National Park is one of Africa’s oldest and most biodiverse rainforests, covering around 1,000 square kilometres of montane forest in south-western Rwanda. Home to 13 primate species and hundreds of birds, butterflies and orchids, Nyungwe offers a wonderful contrast to Rwanda’s savanna and gorilla parks, with a rich range of activities.
Chimpanzee tracking
The park’s star attraction is chimpanzee tracking, a thrilling trek through the forest to spend time with our closest relatives among the trees.
The canopy walk
Nyungwe’s famous canopy walk – a suspended walkway high above the forest floor – is the only one of its kind in East Africa and a highlight for many visitors.
Primate and nature walks
Guided walks track other primates such as the acrobatic Angolan colobus monkeys, which move in huge troops, along with L’Hoest’s and other monkeys. Gentle nature walks reveal the forest’s plants, birds and butterflies.
Birding, hiking and waterfalls
With around 300 bird species including many Albertine Rift endemics, Nyungwe is a birding paradise. A network of hiking trails leads to viewpoints, waterfalls and through pristine forest, including the popular waterfall trail.
