Gorilla trekking in Virunga National Park is one of Africa’s most adventurous wildlife experiences. Located in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Virunga is Africa’s oldest national park and home to several habituated families of mountain gorillas, offering a wilder, more intimate alternative to trekking in Rwanda or Uganda.

The trekking experience

Treks depart from the Bukima patrol post, where rangers guide small groups into the forested foothills of the Virunga volcanoes in search of the gorillas. Once found, visitors spend a magical hour with these gentle giants. Trek difficulty varies with the gorillas’ location, from gentle walks to steep, muddy climbs.

Permits and cost

Virunga’s gorilla permits are considerably cheaper than Rwanda’s, making it an attractive option for adventurous travellers, though logistics and security require careful planning with an experienced operator.
