Exploring Mgahinga Gorilla National Park: Where Gold Meets Silver

Tucked into the southwestern corner of Uganda, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the country’s smallest national park at just 33.7 square kilometers. Established as a game sanctuary in 1930 and gazetted as a national park in 1991, it protects the northern slopes of three majestic Virunga volcanoes—Muhavura (4,127 m), Gahinga (3,474 m), and Sabinyo (3,645 m)—part of the chain of eight volcanoes straddling the borders of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The park’s tagline, “Where Gold Meets Silver,” beautifully captures the sight of golden monkeys darting through bamboo forests against the silver-backed mountain gorillas in the misty volcanic landscape. These diverse ecosystems—from montane forest and bamboo zones to Afro-alpine vegetation—create a stunning backdrop and support exceptional biodiversity.

Remarkable Wildlife and Birdlife

Mgahinga provides critical habitat for endangered mountain gorillas, with one habituated family available for trekking. The park also hosts the striking golden monkey—endemic to the Virunga massif and Albertine Rift—with habituated groups for tracking. Other mammals include forest elephants, buffaloes, black-fronted duikers, and various small predators.

Birdlife is outstanding, with around 190 species, many Albertine Rift endemics. Highlights include the Rwenzori turaco, Rwenzori nightjar, Kivu ground thrush, Rwenzori batis, dusky turtle dove, and Doherty’s bush-shrike.

The park holds deep cultural significance for the indigenous Batwa (pygmies), the ancient forest people who once lived sustainably within its caves and forests before conservation-led evictions.

Unmissable Activities

Gorilla Trekking Mgahinga’s single habituated gorilla family offers an intimate experience amid dramatic volcanic scenery. Treks begin with a morning briefing at Ntebeko Gate; groups of up to 8 visitors spend one magical hour with the gorillas after a hike that can last from a few hours to a full day.

Golden Monkey Tracking Track these vibrant, endangered primates in the bamboo forests along the Gahinga trail. Limited to groups of 6-8, this energetic activity provides close views of the habituated troops (40-60 individuals in Mgahinga out of 3,000-4,000 in the Virungas).

Volcano Hiking All three peaks are climbable in a day:

• Mount Muhavura (8-10 hours, 12 km round trip): Steep ascent rewarded with panoramic views of the Virunga chain, Lake Edward, Bwindi, and distant Rwenzori peaks on clear days.
• Mount Gahinga: 6-7 hours, featuring a swamp-filled crater and giant lobelias—prime golden monkey habitat.
• Mount Sabinyo (8-10 hours, 14 km): Follows sharp ridges to a summit where you can stand in Uganda, Rwanda, and DRC simultaneously.

Birdwatching and Nature Walks The Gorge Trail between Gahinga and Sabinyo (3-5 hours) is a birding hotspot. Other routes include the border trail to Congo (passing varied vegetation and a viewpoint crater), Sabinyo Gorge through Rugezi Swamp, and the bamboo-zone golden monkey track.

Batwa Cultural Trail Join former hunter-gatherer Batwa guides on a poignant journey through their ancestral forest. Learn traditional hunting, honey gathering, medicinal plants, and fire-making. The experience culminates in the sacred Garama Cave, where Batwa women perform haunting songs that echo through the darkness—a moving insight into a vanishing culture.

How to Get There

Mgahinga is located about 510 km southwest of Kampala, in Kisoro District.

By Road:

The standard route runs via Kabale (434 km from Kampala, 8 hours on good tarmac) then 76 km further to Kisoro town on a winding but sealed mountain road. From Kisoro, it’s a short 14 km drive to Ntebeko Gate (park headquarters). 4WD is recommended for the final stretch, especially in wet conditions. Most visitors arrange transport through tour operators.

Public buses and shared taxis operate daily from Kampala to Kabale and Kisoro.

By Air:

Daily scheduled flights from Entebbe International Airport (or Kajjansi Airfield) to Kisoro Airstrip (about 1 hour flight) are available with operators like Aerolink. Transfers from the airstrip to the park gate take around 30 minutes.

The park has no internal roads—vehicles are parked at Ntebeko or trailhead lots, and all exploration is on foot.

Best visited during the dry seasons (June-September and December-February) for clearer views and easier hiking.
