Kahuzi-Biega National Park

A UNESCO World Heritage Site in eastern DR Congo and the best place in the world to see the rare eastern lowland (Grauer's) gorilla.

Kahuzi-Biega National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in eastern DR Congo, named after two extinct volcanoes that rise above its rainforest. It is the world’s premier destination for tracking the eastern lowland gorilla, or Grauer’s gorilla – the largest of the four gorilla subspecies, found nowhere else. Beyond gorillas, the park protects dense tropical forest teeming with primates, forest elephants and hundreds of bird species, offering a rare and rewarding wilderness experience.

Tracking the Grauer’s gorilla

Kahuzi-Biega is the only place in the world where travellers can reliably track the eastern lowland (Grauer’s) gorilla, the largest of the four gorilla subspecies. Several habituated families live within the park, and trekking to see them takes visitors deep into lush lowland rainforest.

The trekking experience

Treks here are generally less strenuous than mountain gorilla treks, as the terrain is flatter. Along the way, visitors may encounter other primates, forest birds and the park’s rich plant life.

Beyond gorillas

The park protects dense tropical forest teeming with primates, forest elephants and hundreds of bird species, offering a rare and rewarding wilderness experience.

Best time to visit

The dry seasons (June to September and December to February) offer the best trekking conditions. As with all DR Congo travel, careful planning with an experienced operator is essential.
