Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve
Exploring Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve: Uganda’s Hidden Wilderness Gem
In northeastern Uganda’s semi-arid Karamoja sub-region, Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve spans approximately 2,275-2,788 square kilometers, making it Uganda’s second-largest protected area after Murchison Falls National Park. North of Mount Elgon and linked to Matheniko and Bokora reserves, it forms part of the Mount Elgon Conservation Area managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
This vast savannah of rolling plains, acacia woodlands, rocky kopjes, and intermittent rivers offers raw, untouched landscapes—ideal for off-the-beaten-path adventures. Named after local Pian (Karamojong subgroup) and Upe (Pokot-related) communities, the reserve has recovered from past poaching and conflict through ongoing reintroductions.
Diverse Wildlife in a Recovering Ecosystem

Pian Upe stands out for rare species restricted to Karamoja in Uganda. It hosts the country’s only remaining roan antelopes and occasional cheetahs (second site after Kidepo Valley). Reintroduced Rothschild’s giraffes (since 2019) join buffaloes, zebras, elands, greater kudus, topis, oribis, Jackson’s hartebeests, dik-diks, and predators like leopards, spotted hyenas, and jackals.
Primates include olive baboons, patas monkeys, and vervet monkeys. Reptiles feature rock pythons, puff adders, and savannah monitors. Over 240 bird species thrive here, including ostriches, Hartlaub’s bustards, Jackson’s hornbills, white-headed buffalo weavers, and Karamoja apalis.
Loporokocho Swamp provides excellent viewing opportunities.

How to Get There
Pian Upe lies remote, about 8-9 hours’ drive (400+ km) from Kampala via Mbale (90 km further) on the Mbale-Moroto road. Access southern entrances via Chepsikunya or northern via Namalu. 4WD is essential for park tracks.
Charter flights land at nearby Amudat airstrip. Combine visits with Mount Elgon (Sipi Falls), Kidepo Valley, or Karamoja cultural tours.
Best Time to Visit
Dry season (June-September, December-February) for easier access and concentrated wildlife at water sources, though the reserve remains rewarding year-round with fewer crowds.
Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve delivers an authentic, uncrowded safari—focusing on rare species, vast horizons, and cultural immersion in one of Uganda’s most pristine wildernesses.
