Kilimanjaro National Park is far more than the mountain itself. This 291-square-mile UNESCO World Heritage Site protects everything from lowland bush and lush rainforest to alpine desert and the glaciers of Africa’s highest peak. Here are the top things to do inside the park.
Climb Mount Kilimanjaro
For most visitors, summiting the “Roof of Africa” is the ultimate goal – a once-in-a-lifetime achievement. Solo trekking is not permitted, so you climb with a licensed guide. Popular routes include the Marangu and Machame trails, and expeditions typically take between five and nine days. The longer routes give you more time to acclimatise, which significantly improves your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak.
Hike the Shira Plateau
West of Kibo lies the Shira Plateau, a high caldera rich in biodiversity. Walking across it, you pass the remains of an ancient lava flow and may spot elephant, buffalo, eland and even lion in the surrounding terrain – a rewarding day for wildlife enthusiasts.
Explore the rainforest belt
The mountain’s lower slopes are cloaked in tropical forest where meltwater streams sustain some of the continent’s finest elephant herds, along with buffalo, elands and monkeys. Keep an eye out for the endangered Abbott’s duiker.
