Overview

The Machame Route is Kilimanjaro's most scenic classic: ascending through afromontane forest into the heath zone and onto the edge of the ancient Shira volcano, then circling the main peak of Kibo anticlockwise past giant steps and glacial valleys. The final ascent from Barafu Camp is a night climb to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) via Stella Point, with the descent on the Mweka route – crossing the Shira Plateau and seeing a huge portion of the national park along the way.

This 6-day trekking itinerary (8 days with arrival and departure) is a fit hiker's challenge: the section from Barranco to base camp is long and the rest before the summit bid short, so good fitness and prior acclimatization – ideally a Mount Meru climb – pay off handsomely. Hike distance 63 km; total ascent about 5,068 m.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

1

Kilimanjaro Airport – Arusha/Moshi

Airport pick-up and transfer to your hotel for briefing, equipment check, and overnight (B&B).

2

Machame Gate to Machame Camp (1,800 m → 2,835 m)

Drive to Kilimanjaro National Park, complete formalities, and hike 11 km (5–7 hours) through verdant, steep-in-places afromontane forest, with a picnic lunch on the trail.

3

Machame Camp to Shira Camp (3,750 m)

A shorter but steep 5 km stage (4–6 hours) into the heath zone of helichrysum and lobelia, passing lava tubes and glacial valleys, arriving in time for a hot lunch.

4

Lava Tower to Barranco Camp (3,900 m)

The classic “walk high, sleep low” day: ascend the alpine desert to Lava Tower (4,600 m) for lunch, then descend to Barranco Camp beneath its giant groundsels – 10 km, 6–8 hours, and superb acclimatization.

5

Barranco Wall to Barafu Camp (4,673 m)

Climb the famous Barranco Wall and traverse glacial valleys to Karanga for lunch, continuing to the windswept Barafu base camp with evening views of Mawenzi. Early dinner and rest – 9 km, 6–8 hours.

6

Summit night – Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) – Mweka Camp

Departing just before midnight, patience and persistence carry you to Stella Point (5,750 m) by dawn and on to Uhuru Peak – the Roof of Africa. After summit photos, descend via base camp all the way to Mweka Camp (18 km, 14–16 hours; walking poles strongly recommended).

7

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – Moshi

A final 10 km descent through the forest (3–4 hours), certificate collection, farewell to your crew, and transfer to the hotel for a well-deserved shower and celebration visit from our representative.

8

Departure

Breakfast and airport transfer for your homeward flight – or extend with a safari or Zanzibar beach stay.
