Overview
12 Days: Rwenzori Margherita Peak (5,109m) is a demanding summit ascent to the highest point of Uganda and the third-highest mountain in Africa. This circular trek through the legendary Mountains of the Moon u2013 a UNESCO World Heritage Site u2013 leads through surreal Afro-alpine landscapes of giant lobelia, groundsel and tree heather, along the Mubuku and Bujuku valleys to glacial lakes and snow-capped peaks on the Ugandau2013Congo border. Supported by an experienced team of guides and porters, it is physically demanding but deeply rewarding for fit adventurers.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Arrival in Entebbe
Arrive at Entebbe and transfer to your hotel in Kampala.

Kampala to Kasese
Long scenic drive north through hill country, tea plantations and papyrus wetlands to Kasese, the gathering point for Rwenzori mountaineers, where you sort and prepare your mountain equipment.

Kasese u2013 Ibanda u2013 Nyabitaba Hut (2,650m)
Drive to Nyakalengija and meet your guides, cooks and porters. Trek through tall elephant grass and tropical forest along the Mubuku River, crossing bridges, to the Nyabitaba Hut with views of the Portal Peaks. (B,L,D)

Nyabitaba Hut u2013 John Matte Hut (3,480m)
Cross the Bujuku-Mubuku confluence and climb through lush jungle, muddy forest and the first Senecio groves to the John Matte Hut. (B,L,D)

John Matte Hut u2013 Bujuku Hut (3,970m)
Traverse the boggy Lower and Upper Bogs and dense Senecio forest to Bujuku Hut, set above the lake with views of Mt Baker, the Stanley massif and Mt Speke. (B,L,D)

Bujuku Hut u2013 Elena Hut (4,540m)
Climb through bog and Senecio forest, ascending a long metal ladder to the Elena Hut below the Elena Glacier in preparation for the summit. (B,L,D)

Ascent of Margherita Peak (5,109m)
Set off around 4 a.m. across rock terraces and the Stanley Plateau glacier (crampons required), reaching the summit after 5u20137 hours for breathtaking views into Congo, then descend to the Elena Hut. (B,L,D)

Kitandara Lakes / Reserve Day
Descend to the scenic Kitandara Lakes, or use as a weather reserve day for the summit. (B,L,D)

Kitandara Hut u2013 Guy Yeoman Hut (3,450m)
A long, demanding day over the Freshfield Pass (4,280m) and down steep, slippery terrain past the historic Bujongolo Cave to the Guy Yeoman Hut. (B,L,D)

Guy Yeoman Hut u2013 Kasese
Final descent off the mountain to Nyakalengija and transfer to your hotel in Kasese.

Return to Entebbe
Drive back to Entebbe/Kampala for your final night.

Departure
Transfer to Entebbe Airport for your flight home or onward travel.
