The 10 Days Rwenzori Central Circuit with Margherita Peak is a classic mountaineering expedition to the roof of Uganda. Following the famous Central Circuit trail through the glacier-carved valleys of the Rwenzori Mountains u2013 the legendary Mountains of the Moon and a UNESCO World Heritage Site u2013 you ascend through surreal Afro-alpine vegetation to summit Margherita Peak (5,109m), the highest point in Uganda and third highest in Africa.
Arrive and transfer to your hotel for overnight and briefing.
Scenic drive west to Kasese, gateway to the Rwenzori, to prepare equipment.
Begin the trek through elephant grass and tropical forest along the Mubuku River to Nyabitaba Camp.
Cross the Mubuku-Bujuku confluence and climb through lush jungle and the first Senecio groves to John Matte Camp.
Traverse the boggy Bigo Bog and Senecio forest to Bujuku Camp with views of Mt Baker, Speke and the Stanley massif.
Climb past Lake Bujuku and ascend to the Elena Hut below the glacier in preparation for the summit.
Pre-dawn summit ascent across the Stanley Plateau glacier (crampons required) to Margherita Peak, then descend to Kitandara Camp.
Cross the Freshfield Pass and descend steep, slippery terrain past Bujongolo Cave to Guy Yeoman Camp.
Final long descent off the mountain back to the trailhead.
Drive back to Kampala/Entebbe, marking the end of your expedition.
