Mount Kenya National Park protects Africa’s second-highest mountain, rising to 5,199 metres. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it offers everything from gentle forest walks to challenging multi-day ascents amid glaciers, tarns and striking alpine scenery.
Climbing Mount Kenya
The mountain offers both easy and challenging routes to its peaks. Point Lenana (4,985m) is the trekkers’ summit, reachable without technical climbing, while Batian and Nelion are reserved for experienced mountaineers.
Wildlife and scenery
The lower forest and moorland slopes are home to elephant, buffalo, monkeys and a rich variety of birds, while the higher zones reveal giant lobelias, glaciers and breathtaking views. To the Kikuyu people, Mount Kenya is a sacred place, the home of Ngai.
Best time to visit
The driest months – January to February and June to October – are best for trekking and clear mountain views.
