Katavi National Park is Tanzania’s third-largest national park and one of its most remote and untouched. Tucked away in the far west of the country, it sees very few visitors, rewarding those who make the journey with a raw, exclusive wilderness experience that feels a world away from the busier northern circuit.
Wildlife
Katavi is famous for its dramatic dry-season game concentrations. As the floodplains dry out, enormous herds of buffalo – sometimes thousands strong – gather alongside elephant, giraffe, zebra and antelope, drawing lion, leopard and other predators. The park’s rivers and shrinking pools become crowded with hippo and crocodile.
A true wilderness
With only a handful of camps and almost no other vehicles, Katavi offers a genuine sense of pristine, old-Africa wilderness – ideal for seasoned safari-goers seeking solitude.
Best time to visit
The dry season (June to October) is by far the best time, when wildlife concentrates spectacularly around the remaining water.
