The Ngorongoro Crater can be visited all year, but each season offers a different experience. Broadly, the dry season (June to October) is the peak and most rewarding time, while the green season (November to May) is quieter and cheaper.
Dry season – the peak
During the dry months, animals congregate around pools and water sources on the crater floor, concentrating game and making sightings reliable. It is the best time of year to look for black rhino, and most premium and mid-range crater-rim lodges are open. Staying on the rim gives magnificent views, and Maasai cultural visits are easy to arrange. Expect larger crowds, cold mornings, and higher crater-entry fees at this time.
Green season – quiet and lush
From November to April/May, short and then heavier rains transform the landscape. Tall grass and dispersed water mean animals spread out and can be harder to spot, but visitor numbers are far lower, fees are more modest, and the fresh green scenery is beautiful. Birding is at its best, as migratory species arrive in numbers.
