A boat cruise on Lake Ihema is one of the highlights of a safari in Akagera National Park. Rwanda’s second-largest lake, Ihema teems with life, and gliding across its waters offers a relaxed, close-up perspective you simply cannot get from a game-drive vehicle.
What you will see
The lake is home to large pods of hippo and basking Nile crocodiles, often seen at close range. The birdlife is exceptional – keep watch for African fish eagles, ospreys, herons, jacanas, malachite kingfishers and, for the lucky, the prehistoric-looking shoebill that makes Akagera’s wetlands famous among birders.
The experience
Cruises last around two to three hours and typically depart at set times through the day, including early morning and late afternoon when wildlife and light are at their best. Scheduled shared launches and private boat hire are both available.
