Deciding when to visit the Ngorongoro Conservation Area depends on what you want to see. Home to the Big Five as well as the “Small Five” and “Special Five”, Ngorongoro rewards visitors year-round, but climate, migration and breeding patterns all shift with the seasons.
Dry season (June to October)
The dry season is widely regarded as the best time to visit. As water sources shrink, animals concentrate around the remaining pools, making game viewing on the crater floor superb – this is also the best window for spotting black rhino. Most crater-rim lodges are open, stagnant water and malaria risk are lower, and Maasai cultural visits are easily arranged. The trade-offs are bigger crowds, colder mornings and evenings, and higher crater fees.
Green season (November to May)
Short rains fall from November to December and longer rains from February to April. Grass grows tall and animals disperse because water is plentiful, so game viewing can be harder – but the scenery is lush, crowds thin out, prices drop, and birding is excellent thanks to migratory species. The crater still delivers rewarding wildlife sightings even in the wet months.
