Knowing the best time to visit Meru National Park helps you make the most of this uncrowded Kenyan gem. Meru enjoys warm temperatures year-round – daytime highs of around 21–27°C – and can be visited in any season, though wildlife viewing, access and cost vary with the rains.
Dry season (July to October)
The long dry season is the best time for game viewing. With little rain, vegetation thins and wildlife concentrates along the park’s permanent rivers, making animals easier to find. Dry roads make travel simple, and this period conveniently coincides with the Masai Mara migration and the northern-hemisphere summer holidays, ideal for combining safari destinations. Meru remains far quieter than Kenya’s busier parks even in peak season.
Short rains (November to December)
Brief afternoon and evening showers freshen the landscape without seriously disrupting travel. Roads generally remain passable and visitor numbers are lower, apart from the festive Christmas and New Year period.
Green season (March to May)
The long rains bring lush scenery and are the wettest months, when some roads become tricky and a few lodges close. The rewards are excellent birding – boosted by migratory species – newborn animals, dramatic skies and lower accommodation rates.
